Your mental health is more important than the test, the interview, the lunch date, the meeting, the family dinner, the soccer game, the recital, and the grocery-run. Take care of yourself. Here are some ways you can put yourself first.

Take advantage of the resources the university offers

Student Health Service provides medical treatment for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health related conditions. They work with University Counseling Services, where you have someone to talk to when you’re feeling hopeless, lonely, or depressed. They strive to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all our students.

Catch some ZZZ’s

College is notorious for sleep deprivation. Studying for exams or completing group projects may keep you up until the late hours of the night but remember, your health is far more important than a grade.

Exercise regularly

Scientifically, exercise elevates your mood, reduces stress, increases energy levels, and stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin, which make you happier. Even if it’s taking a 15 minute walk, it counts!

Get a good laugh

Watch a funny TV show or a comedic movie. Find anything that will make you giggle because laughing decreases pain, promotes muscle relaxation, and ultimately reduces anxiety. Show the world that smile!

Schedule a massage

UWEC Recreation offers massage therapy to alleviate stress and reduce physical and mental pain. They offer a variety of massages at affordable prices. Treat yourself to a session of pure relaxation.

Pet the therapy dogs

Our furry friends visit us on campus quite often. Take a few minutes of your day to stop and pet the therapy dogs. These doggos are sure to make you feel warm on the inside.

Unplug for a few hours

Try setting aside social media for a few hours and being present in what is going on around you.

Declutter your living space

Tidy up your room by getting rid of things you may not need anymore that are just taking up space in your room. It will leave you feeling lighter and allow you to be more productive.

Soak in some Vitamin D

Spend some time outside in the warm air under the rays of sunshine. 15 minutes in between classes will even do!

Listen to a playlist of your favorite songs

What songs make you want to do a little dance and leave you feeling happy? Cue them up on your walk to class!

Remember to be gentle with yourself; you’re doing the best that you can.
